Almost everything here is locally owned, because Udzungwa never attracted the international safari brands: there is no game-drive circuit for them to sell. The TANAPA properties at Mang'ula put money straight into the park, Twiga Hotel appears inside TANAPA's own tariff document, and the guesthouses in Mang'ula town are village businesses. The community-run Udzungwa Guide Association, founded in 2020, channels 15 per cent of member earnings into a local loan fund.
Basic park rest house · Mang'ula park headquarters, at the trailheads
The simplest way to stay at the point where everything starts. It is a basic rest house at park headquarters, not a lodge, and TANAPA publishes no detail on rooms or facilities. What it buys you is the shortest possible distance between waking up and being on the Sanje trail, which on a 4 to 5 hour climb matters more than a comfortable mattress.

The trail camps are not a budget alternative to a lodge, they are the infrastructure of the multi-day treks. Njokamoni Wilderness Camp and Mwanihana Base Camp are the two nights on the three-day Mwanihana route; Campsite 3 serves the Hidden Valleys walk. Expect nothing but a place to pitch. Public campsites at headquarters need no booking; special, seasonal and fly campsites do.

A hotel on a working mixed farm on the escarpment, with en-suite rooms, hot showers, a restaurant and bar, free Wi-Fi and laundry, plus camping on the grounds for $10. Its unusual feature is that its rates sit inside TANAPA's official Udzungwa tariff document, which is why we categorise it as park-linked, though its exact legal relationship to TANAPA is not something we could establish. Treat the $40 and $60 figures as the ones that count.

Eco tented camp: en-suite tents and thatched huts · Forest edge at Mang'ula, directly on the Njokamoni trail
The best-known private option at Mang'ula and the one most independent hikers use. En-suite tents and thatched huts on the forest edge, with a bar and dining area, and direct access to a trailhead rather than a drive to one. The camp produces the trail information sheet that most visitors end up using, which tells you something about how seriously it takes the walking. We could not verify a current official website, so book through a Tanzanian operator or by direct enquiry.
It appears in booking listings as a separate Mang'ula property at around $85 a night, but it may be a duplicate listing of Udzungwa Forest Camp under a different trading name, and we could not resolve that. If you are booking it, confirm the physical location and what you are actually reserving before you pay.
Basic local guesthouse · Mang'ula town, minutes from park headquarters
Mang'ula is a working town on the Mikumi to Ifakara road, and it has a spread of small guesthouses at $20 to $40 a night. Standards vary and none of them publish anything, so this is a turn-up-and-look category rather than a booking one. For hikers doing day walks on a tight budget, it is the obvious choice and it puts your money into the village next to the park.
Luxury lodge with 40 en-suite rooms · About 10 km from Kilombero township, near Ruaha Junction at Kiberege
The most comfortable option in the Kilombero area and the least like a bush camp. Forty en-suite rooms, a pool, a coffee shop and bakery, a generator against the power cuts, and conference facilities that bring in a domestic corporate trade alongside visitors. It is roughly ten kilometres from Kilombero township, so it is a base near the park rather than at it: factor in the drive to Mang'ula each morning.
