August is Udzungwa's driest month on record, just 12 mm of rain over 3 days, the lowest total anywhere on the thirty-year average.
If you only want the answer
August gives you the clearest, driest conditions of the year, with the trade-off that the smaller waterfalls run thin. Sanje's main fall, fed by a larger catchment, keeps flowing regardless.
As dry as this park gets
The numbers make August the single driest month at Udzungwa: 12 mm of rain across 3 days, against January's 369 mm across 22. Days warm slightly from July to 25.1°C and nights lift to 15.1°C, a genuine improvement on July's cold trail-camp nights while the trails themselves stay just as firm.
That dryness has one honest cost worth knowing before you set out. Prince Bernhard Falls and Sonjo Waterfall draw on smaller catchments than Sanje, and both run noticeably thinner by August after five months without meaningful rain. Sanje itself, at 170 metres and three tiers, draws on a larger system and keeps a real flow year-round, so it is the fall to prioritise if volume matters to you this month.
What August is genuinely good for
Firm footing, minimal leech activity and reliable access to every tier of Sanje, including the upper viewpoint over the Kilombero floodplain, which the operators who caution against it in the long rains have no reason to restrict now. This is also a strong month for the multi-day treks, with Mwanihana's three-day climb and the five-day Lumemo Trail both running on trails at their most stable. Keep the elevation gradient in mind as well: the 25.1°C recorded near Mang'ula says nothing about the cooler air waiting on Mwanihana's plateau and bamboo belt higher up, so pack layers for the climb even on a warm, dry day at the base.
Water carrying still matters regardless of the season: the standard two litres per person applies whatever the month, since there is no safe drinking water on any trail here.
One practical note
If a thundering waterfall photograph is specifically what you came for, this is not the month for it; come back in the wet season for that. If firm ground, clear views and the best odds of completing an ambitious multi-day route matter more to you, August delivers all three, and as in every month, a guide is assigned the day you register at Mang'ula rather than booked in advance.
