How to get to Udzungwa Mountains National Park

By road from Dar es Salaam, the standard route

Take the TANZAM highway west through Morogoro and Mikumi, then turn south for Mang'ula. TANAPA gives the distance as 380 kilometres; other sources put it at 350. Either way it is four to six hours and it is tarmac the whole way, with only the final approach tracks getting rough.

That makes Udzungwa unusual among Tanzania's southern parks: you do not need a flight, you do not need a 4x4 for the journey itself, and you can do it comfortably in a day from the coast.

One thing to know about the middle of the route. The TANZAM highway physically passes through Mikumi National Park, and animals cross it. TANAPA installed CCTV and live surveillance in 2024 to reduce roadkill, and there is a reduced-speed zone through the park. We could not verify the exact posted limit, though 50 km/h is informally cited. Slow down through Mikumi regardless.

Distances and driving times

We could not resolve the Iringa distance. Published figures range from about 100 km to 221 km, almost certainly because different sources measure to different endpoints. Treat it as a two-hour-plus drive and confirm locally rather than trusting a single number.

The TAZARA train: verified, but check before you count on it

TANAPA's own brochure confirms that the railway passes through the local town of Mang'ula and takes you close to the park's gate. That much is not in doubt. What is in doubt is whether you can practically use it in 2026.

One source describes only a twice-weekly local shuttle between Kidatu and Makambako rather than a through service from Dar es Salaam. The Dar to Zambia mainline has a history of suspensions and only resumed cross-border service in February 2026. The Tuesday and Friday, six to seven hour Dar to Mang'ula service quoted on Wikivoyage is unverified.

If arriving by train appeals, and it is a genuinely lovely way to arrive, confirm the current timetable with TAZARA directly before building a trip around it. Have a road plan as a backup.

By air

There is no scheduled air service to Udzungwa. Charters land at the Msolwa and Kilombero airstrips, both official, and the nearest major airport is Dar es Salaam.

For most visitors flying is not worth it here. Unlike Ruaha or Katavi, the road is good and the drive is short enough that a charter buys you very little.

Self-driving, fuel and what happens to your car

• A high-clearance SUV handles the approach comfortably in the dry season. You do not need a 4x4 for the highway itself.
• Fuel is available in Mang'ula but supply is inconsistent. Fill up in Mikumi or Morogoro and arrive with a full tank.
• Your vehicle stays parked at Mang'ula headquarters. There are no roads inside the park, so there is nothing to drive it on once you arrive.
• TANAPA publishes no Udzungwa-specific vehicle fee, which fits a park with no interior road network. The national weight-based schedule may still be applied; ask when you register.
• Register at headquarters and the Visitor Information Centre on arrival: pay, get assigned a guide or ranger, and sign in.

Combining Udzungwa with other parks

Mikumi is the natural pairing at sixty kilometres, one to ninety minutes up the road, and gives you the savanna game viewing that Udzungwa deliberately does not offer. Two or three days in each makes a well-balanced week.

Ruaha and Nyerere both sit on the same Kilombero and Iringa corridor and can be added on, though both are a substantially longer haul. A common shape for a southern circuit is Mikumi for game drives, Udzungwa for walking and primates, then Ruaha for the big-game finale.
