Month by month

Udzungwa in June

June is where the numbers turn decisively: rain collapses to 23 mm over just 4 days, down from May's 134 mm, and every trail in the park, including the multi-day routes, opens up as a real option.

If you only want the answer

June starts the best hiking window at Udzungwa, with the firmest footing, the lowest leech activity and no restriction on the upper Sanje tiers or the plateau routes.

The dry season starts here

The drop from May to June is the sharpest move on Udzungwa's whole calendar: 134 mm down to 23 mm, and rain days from 9 to 4. Days actually cool slightly to 23.5°C, a touch below May's 24.5°C, because June belongs to the dry season's cooler, clearer air rather than any lingering wet-season heat. Nights fall to 14.6°C, cold enough to notice at a trail camp. Sanje's flow, swollen through the wet season, begins the same recession the rain does, though it never thins out as far as the shorter falls will by August.

This is the month the caution that governed March through May lifts. Operators stop warning against Sanje's upper tiers, and the Mwanihana and Lumemo routes, with their steep, landslide-prone sections in the long rains, move back to being straightforward strenuous walks rather than weather-dependent ones.

What opens up for the ambitious routes

If Mwanihana Peak's three-day climb through miombo woodland, lowland and sub-montane forest, open plateau, montane forest and a bamboo belt to a 2,150-metre summit is on your list, June is a genuinely good month to start it. The same goes for the five-day Lumemo Trail, which shares the early Mwanihana path before following the river for three more nights and exiting at Ifakara. Both still require the mandatory armed ranger alongside your guide, for elephant and buffalo on the high interior, not for the ground.

One elevation note worth carrying with you: the day-high figures published for the park apply to the base near Mang'ula. Climb the 1,850 metres to Mwanihana's summit and the air at 2,150 metres runs noticeably colder than anything on this page, cold enough that the sleeping bag you pack for the trek matters more than the daytime temperature suggests.

Booking, such as it is

Even in the best month of the year, Udzungwa does not develop the kind of demand that forces advance planning. A guide gets assigned once you register at Mang'ula headquarters, same as every other month. What is worth arranging ahead in June specifically is a porter, if you are attempting Mwanihana or Lumemo, since they are hired privately at roughly $15 to $25 a day and are easiest to line up before you arrive rather than at the gate.
