Where is Udzungwa Mountains National Park, and how do you get in?
Udzungwa rises above the Kilombero valley in south-central Tanzania, reached through Mang'ula near Ifakara or via Mikumi on the road from Dar es Salaam. The park protects nearly 2,000 km² of Eastern Arc rainforest and, unlike almost every other park in this guide, has no road inside its boundary.

Why this guide exists, and where the numbers come from
This guide is written by someone who overlanded much of Africa in his own Land Cruiser with a rooftop tent, and for whom the national parks were what stayed. The information about them online was usually missing, wrong or years old: fees from three tariff sheets ago, camps that had closed, roads described by people who had never driven them.
So this guide runs on the park authority's own tariff document rather than a copied operator page, on thirty-year climate normals rather than brochure weather, and on what the camps tell us directly. Every claim carries a date. Where TANAPA is silent, so are we, apart from saying that it is silent.
Nothing here is for sale. Listing a camp is free and no position on any page can be bought. Some outbound links earn us a small commission, and that changes neither the order of a list nor a single figure on these pages.

Seven places to stay, all of them modest; this is a walking park with no lodges of the safari-camp kind. These four mark out that narrow range, from a trail campsite to the best-known private option at the trailhead.
Park-run, at the trailhead
TANAPA Rest House, Mang'ula
A basic rest house at park headquarters, which buys you the shortest possible distance between waking up and being on the Sanje trail.
Mid-range, on the escarpment
Twiga Hotel
A hotel on a working farm above the Kilombero valley, unusually listed inside TANAPA's own Udzungwa tariff, with hot showers, Wi-Fi and Sykes' monkeys around the grounds.
The best-equipped option
Udzungwa Forest Camp (Hondo Hondo)
En-suite tents and thatched huts on the forest edge at Mang'ula, with direct access to a trailhead rather than a drive to one, and the camp that produces the trail information sheet most hikers use.
