March marks the hinge in Udzungwa's calendar: rain drops from February's 352 mm to 245 mm over 18 days, and the start of what guides call the long rains falls inside it.
If you only want the answer
March is a transition month in both directions: TANAPA's birding peak has just ended, and the caution that runs through May, about the upper tiers of Sanje, starts partway through it.
Less rain, but a different kind of caution starts
The thirty-year average shows March easing off from February, down to 245 mm across 18 rain days, with days averaging 26.6°C and nights 19.7°C, and the fall to it still running fuller than it will through the dry months ahead. That is a real drop in volume, but it lands inside a specific window worth knowing about: from around mid-March, operators start advising against the upper tiers of Sanje Waterfall, a caution that runs through May. Ask at headquarters or of your guide directly whether that day's climb includes the top viewpoint, because the answer can change from week to week.
The lower two tiers and the swimming pools beneath them stay accessible through this. What closes off is the final push to the panorama over the Kilombero floodplain, and only when conditions call for it, not as a blanket rule for the whole month.
The birding peak has just closed, the wildflowers are opening
TANAPA's birding peak runs through February, so March is the first month outside it, though the migratory nesting activity does not switch off overnight. What picks up instead is the other reason to walk in the wet: TANAPA itself rates the wildflower and butterfly display from November through April as more exciting for photography than the dry season produces, and March sits well inside that stretch.
The Udzungwa red colobus keeps its Sanje and Mwanihana canopy routine regardless of any of this. Rain, sun or the transition between them changes almost nothing about where this primate spends its day, one of the few constants on a calendar built mostly around what the rain is doing.
Plan around the guide's daily read, not a fixed rule
As in every month, your guide is assigned when you register at Mang'ula, and nothing about March requires booking beyond the special, seasonal or fly campsites and multi-day trek camps that always need it.
The one thing worth doing differently in March: ask specifically about the upper Sanje viewpoint before you commit to that climb over Njokamoni's quieter, lower route, since March is the first month where the answer might genuinely be no.
