What a visit to Udzungwa actually costs

Budget one: camping and the two hikes almost everyone does

About $330.40 for two people over two nights, and here is the arithmetic. You register at Mang'ula on arrival, walk the Sanje Waterfall trail on your first full day, and add the shorter Njokamoni forest trail on your second morning before departure. Both are compulsory-guide hikes, and Udzungwa charges the guide fee per group per day rather than per walk, so two hiking days means two guide-fee charges.

The conservation fee is $30 per person per day plus 18% VAT, which is $35.40 at the counter, per the official TANAPA tariff checked 27 July 2026. Camping at a public campsite is the same $30 plus VAT structure, $35.40 per person per night. We count two fee-days for a two-night stay, matching the nights; if the gate also bills a partial arrival or departure day, add accordingly.

The compulsory guide fee is $20 plus VAT per group per day, which is $23.60, and one guide takes up to six people. A two-person group pays the identical $23.60 that a six-person group pays, so travelling as a pair buys none of the economies of scale a bigger group gets.

You carry your own tent, food and drinking water. The trail camps and the Mang'ula public campsite have no facilities beyond the site itself, and there is nowhere inside the park to buy supplies. Do your food and water shopping in Mikumi or Morogoro on the way in.

Budget two: the Hondo Hondo lodge class

About $548.80 to $828.80 for two people over two nights, built on Udzungwa Forest Camp, known locally as Hondo Hondo. It sits on the forest edge at Mang'ula, directly on the Njokamoni trail, and it is the best-known private option for independent hikers here. We could not find a published rate card: sources put full board at roughly $90 to $160 per person per night, so the range above reflects that spread rather than a single confirmed figure. Confirm the actual rate before you book.

Udzungwa Falls Lodge, the more comfortable alternative, sits about 10 km from Kilombero township near the Ruaha junction, further from the trailheads than Hondo Hondo. Its own site prices it at TSh 190,000 per person per night, fully inclusive; third-party sites quote from about $95, but the two figures do not obviously reconcile and we have no current exchange rate we can stand behind, so we have left it out of the table below. Ask the lodge directly for a dollar figure before you budget against it.

Either lodge sits outside the park boundary, but Udzungwa's tariff makes no distinction between sleeping inside or outside for the conservation fee, unlike some parks in this network. You pay the same $35.40 per person per day regardless of where your bed is.

Udzungwa Forest Lodge, a separate listing at around $85 a night, may or may not be the same property as Hondo Hondo under a different trading name; our lodge data could not resolve that, so confirm what you are actually booking before you pay.

Budget three: the combination play, Udzungwa between Mikumi and Ruaha

About $365.20 for two people over two nights, using Udzungwa as the walking stop on a road trip that starts with game drives at Mikumi and continues toward Ruaha. This is where the park's road access actually pays off: Mikumi to Mang'ula is about 60 km, one to one and a half hours on sealed road, and the whole 380 km from Dar es Salaam is tarmac. You do not need a 4x4 for the journey itself, which is rare on this network; a high-clearance SUV handles it comfortably in the dry season, and your vehicle simply parks at Mang'ula headquarters once you arrive, since there is nowhere inside the park to drive it.

For a fast two-night stop we swap camping for the TANAPA Rest House at Mang'ula, $50 per person per night on the official tariff, so you are sleeping at the trailhead and can be walking by 07:00. With a tight schedule we cost one focused hike, the Sanje Waterfall, rather than two.

The onward leg toward Ruaha is where the numbers get vague. Our getting-there data has Iringa to Mang'ula somewhere between 100 and 220 km depending on the source, and Ruaha itself sits further down the same Kilombero and Iringa corridor, a substantially longer haul again. Treat that stretch as at least a half-day drive and confirm the current road distance locally.

This total is park fees and a bed only. It does not include the fuel or transport cost of the Mikumi and Ruaha legs, because neither our fuel-price data nor a Tanzanian bus fare exists in the files behind this page. That is unlike Gonarezhou, where a dated ZERA diesel price lets us cost the drive to the dollar; here, that line is genuinely unverified, so budget for it separately using a current local quote.

Getting there: tarmac, no 4x4, and a fuel line we cannot price

Udzungwa is one of the only parks in this network you can reach without a 4x4. The standard route from Dar es Salaam runs 380 km on the TANZAM highway through Morogoro and Mikumi, then turns south for Mang'ula: tarmac the whole way, four to six hours, with only the final approach tracks getting rough. From Mikumi National Park it is about 60 km and one to one and a half hours on sealed road, which is what makes the Mikumi-Udzungwa-Ruaha combination work as a driving trip rather than a series of flights.

What we cannot do is put a dollar figure on any of that driving. Our getting-there data records distances and road surfaces, checked 15 August 2026, but it carries no Tanzanian pump price and no bus fare. Fill up in Mikumi or Morogoro, since fuel supply in Mang'ula itself is inconsistent, and price your own fuel or bus ticket locally rather than trusting a number from this page, because we do not have one to give you.

Paying at the gate

TANAPA is cashless. Multiple 2025 and 2026 sources confirm that neither cash nor debit cards work at the gate: you pay through the TANAPA online reservation and payment system with a Visa or Mastercard, a government e-payment control number, or over the counter at a bank, before you arrive. Register at Mang'ula headquarters and the Visitor Information Centre once you land, where you are assigned your guide or ranger and sign in.

Carry Tanzanian shilling cash anyway. Porters, village fees, tips and community cultural tours sit entirely outside the TANAPA payment system, and nobody there takes a card. Porters run roughly $15 to $25 a day, hired privately and paid in shillings, with no official weight limit the way Kilimanjaro has one.

Two figures conflict with what we quote here, and both are worth knowing about. Udzungwa's own page on tanzaniaparks.go.tz currently lists $50 per adult per day, not the $35.40 the published tariff sheet works out to; we budget on the tariff sheet and suggest carrying enough to cover $59 in case the higher figure is what the gate actually charges. Separately, udzungwa.org, which presents itself as the park's official site, still lists a $20 entry fee and a $10 guide fee: those are roughly a decade out of date and should be ignored.

Where the money surprises people

• There is no vehicle fee, officially, because Udzungwa has no interior roads for a vehicle to use; the tariff document simply has no line for one (checked 27 July 2026). The national weight-based schedule may still apply in practice, but nobody documents whether Mang'ula actually charges it, so ask when you register.
• The guide fee is priced per group, not per person: $23.60 covers up to six walkers on the 2026 tariff, so two people pay exactly what six people pay for the same guide, and the charge resets on every separate hiking day.
• TANAPA's own park page quotes $50 per adult per day, not the $35.40 the tariff sheet works out to (checked 27 July 2026). Budget on the tariff figure, but carry enough to cover $59 in case the gate applies the higher one.
• TANAPA takes no cash and no card at the gate. Your permit has to be paid online, by e-payment control number, or over a bank counter before you travel, which catches visitors used to paying park fees on arrival.
• Multi-day treks add a mandatory armed ranger on top of the guide, because elephant and buffalo hold the high interior on the Mwanihana and Lumemo routes. That fee has no published figure anywhere in the tariff.
• Porters sit entirely outside TANAPA's system: roughly $15 to $25 a day, paid privately in Tanzanian shillings, with no official kilogram load limit.
• Getting yourself here has no priced line in our data at all. Every budget on this page is park fees and a bed; the fuel or bus fare for the drive is genuinely unverified, which is unusual for this network and worth pricing locally before you travel.
