February's thirty-year average is 352 mm of rain over 20 days, a shade lighter than January's total but still deep inside the wettest stretch of the Udzungwa calendar.
If you only want the answer
February is January's slightly gentler twin: still very wet, still inside the birding peak, and still not the month for ambitious multi-day plans.
A small step down from January
The numbers move only slightly from January to February: rain drops from 369 mm to 352 mm, and rain days fall from 22 to 20, still the second-highest count of the year. Days average 27.2°C, half a degree cooler than January, and nights hold at the same 19.9°C. In practical terms, February feels like January with marginally more dry hours in it.
That marginal difference does not change the trail advice. The laterite and exposed rock on Sanje's climb turn just as slick in February's storms as in January's, and the guide who takes you up is reading the sky rather than a forecast app, because Udzungwa does not publish one that matters at this scale, even as Sanje itself keeps running at some of its fullest volume of the year.
The second month of the birding peak
TANAPA names December through February as the birding peak, when migratory species are nesting, and February is the last full month inside that window. If you are building a trip around the forest partridge, the rufous-winged sunbird or the Iringa akalat, February gives you the same access as January with a touch less rain to walk through.
Two or more days on the Mwanihana trail put you in the altitude band where several of these species live, rather than the lower ground the Sanje day walk covers. If birding rather than the waterfall is your main reason for coming, weigh a longer route even in a wet month.
What to plan for
Guide assignment happens on the day you register at Mang'ula, unchanged from any other month, and the only bookings that matter ahead of time are for special or seasonal campsites and any multi-day trek. Leech activity remains high, so treat February exactly as you would January on that front.
One thing worth doing differently: if your trip allows a single flexible day, hold it for later in the month, when the rain total is trending down toward March's noticeably lighter 245 mm.
